How ISU men’s golfer Scott Fernandez has fared against the No. 1 amatuer

Mike Randleman

No. 48 Iowa State will head to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.

The Sun Devils are the No. 3 team in the country, according to Golfstat. They will be the favorite thanks to junior and four-time victor this season, Jon Rahm.

Rahm is No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, No. 2 in the Golfstat NCAA individual rankings and tied for fifth place at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February, a PGA Tour event in which he was competing via a sponsor’s exemption.

Rahm and Iowa State’s Scott Fernandez (No. 101, according to Golfstat) are friends who both hail from Spain, attended the same high school and competed together on the Spanish national team. Below is how the two have stacked up in collegiate competition:

NCAA 2014 Regionals: Fernandez T6th, Rahm T26th

2014 ASU Thunderbird: Fernandez 7th, Rahm 1st

2013 ASU Thunderbird: Fernandez T2nd, Rahm, T11th
