Bill Gate explains the difference between him, Steve Jobs

Bill Gates founded one of the most valuable companies in the world, Microsoft, and Steve Jobs founded one of the most valuable brands in the world, Apple. Both are heralded as two of the biggest innovators and pioneers in technology. But many have been quite interested about what Microsoft’s boss thinks of the late Apple CEO.

Recently Business Insider quoted an explanation made by Gates about what he sees as the differences between himself and Jobs. Gates sees himself as more of a coder focused on the architectural side of technology while he believes Jobs was more design oriented.

The explanation comes from a new book on Jobs, called, “Becoming Steve Jobs,” which is co-authored by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli. Here’s the direct quote from Bill Gates explaining the difference between himself and Jobs:

“He had an expectation of superlative things in his own work and in the products they would create.

Steve had a design mindset. When I get to a hotel room, I don’t go, “Oh, if I had designed this car I would have done this and this.” People like Jony Ive and Steve Jobs are always looking at stuff that way.

You know, I look at code and say, “OK, this is architected well,” but it’s just a different way of understanding the world. His most natural, innate sense was a world class instinct about whether this or that object met certain standards. He had extremely high standards of what was s—, and what was not s—.”

Jobs suffered from a rare form of pancreatic cancer. He passed away in Palo Alto, Calif. on October 5, 2011 at age 56.
