iTunes Top 5 Songs Review

Sierra Pruiett

Being one of the most popular music purchasing sites around, iTunes is a trusted source for what’s popular in the music world. This week on iTunes, the top five songs include Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars; Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”; Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”; Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s “FourFiveSeconds”; and The Weeknd’s “Earned It.”

It’s not a surprise that “Uptown Funk” is featured as number one. Mars’ rich voice singing fun lyrics over a groovy beat creates a song that is irresistible to sing and dance to. “Uptown Funk” is just a fun, spring-time jam to brighten up any rainy day.

“Thinking Out Loud” is just another lovey-dovey song from the adorable Ed Sheeran. My personal favorite and number two on the list, “Thinking Out Loud” has a slow, bluesy sound that is perfect for a bride and groom’s first dance or even just a romantic car ride.

Number three on the list comes straight from the soundtrack of “50 Shades of Grey,” Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do.” Another love song on the list, Goulding’s approach is much more sensual than Sheeran’s, due to the context. Simple lyrics, a common trait in popular songs, flow through Goulding’s brilliantly high-pitched voice over a full, explosive beat.

Paul McCartney broke the longest streak between top-10 charted songs with number four “FourFiveSeconds,” while not straying far from his usual musical style. But, for Kanye and Rihanna, “FourFiveSeconds” is a very different style from their music.

Last but not least is another sensual song from the “50 Shades of Grey” soundtrack, number five, “Earned It” from The Weeknd. This song takes the sexiness of R&B vocals and mixes it with the classical music of the romantic ’20s for a top-rated combination.
