Cyclones take down Badgers on senior day

In a 32-16 win against Wisconsin in the final home dual of the season, the term “senior day” couldn’t have been more true.

It was senior Michael Moreno at 165 pounds who set the tone for the dual. Moreno came into the match ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds, facing off against No. 2 Isaac Jordan. Moreno’s last dual match at Hilton couldn’t have ended any better, as he scored a fall against Jordan.

Tanner Weatherman kept the pace at 174 pounds, scoring another pin for Iowa State before Lelund Weatherspoon would lose by decision at 184 pounds.

All-American Senior Kyven Gadson squared off against Jimmy McCall at 197 pounds. Gadson did not break the pin trend, as he scored a late fall to give Iowa State a 21-7 lead. Wrestling in place of Quean Smith at heavyweight was Joe Scanlan, who was pinned by No. 2 Connor Medbery.

Kyle Larson scored a 5-2 decision at 125 pounds before Earl Hall lost by decision at 133 pounds. It was up to true freshman Dante Rodriguez to keep the Cyclones afloat in the final match of the day. Rodriguez did not disappoint, as he scored a pin to end the day and dual season for Iowa State.

Iowa State’s next action comes at the Big 12 Championships, which will begin at 11 a.m. March 7 at Hilton Coliseum.
