The Lowdown

For the first six minutes or so, the ISU women’s basketball team was struggling with some of the same problems.

They couldn’t make shots or get in any sort of offensive rhythm, for that matter. But more importantly, they couldn’t come up with a defensive stop.

But their struggles proved to be short-lived, with Iowa State (16-9, 7-7 Big 12) beating the Oklahoma Sooners (16-9, 10-4 Big 12) 84-76 in overtime.

The Cyclones found themselves down 10 after six minutes to play. But five straight points from junior guard Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky sparked a 16-0 run by the Cyclones that put them right back in the game.

But it wasn’t just the offense that was clicking for the Cyclones on Feb. 17. By halftime, Iowa State was leading the rebounding battle 21-9, even recording seven offensive boards in the first half. The rebounds and the second-chance points from those rebounds gave the Cyclones a 41-30 lead at the break.

The Cyclones carried their run into the second half when senior guard Brynn Williamson scored eight straight points, including two 3-pointers. The Sooners wouldn’t go away easily, though. They shot 43.8 percent from 3 on the night, bringing them right back within striking distance. The Sooners retook the lead 63-61 with about six minutes left in the game, following a string of 3-point buckets.

The two teams hung together to the last minute of play when Williamson hit a free throw to tie the game 70-70 and eventually sending it into overtime.

With 2:10 left in overtime, Moody hit a contested 3-pointer from the corner to give the Cyclones a 3-point lead. From there, free throws and a Williamson layup were enough to give the Cyclones an 84-76 win.

Williamson finished the game with 24 total points, including five 3-point buckets. Nikki Moody followed close behind, finishing with 22 points on the night.
