5 things to know about freshman gymnast Haylee Young

1. Young, who was born in Raleigh, N.C., started her gymnastics career while her family lived in Maine. At age three, she enrolled in a “Mommy and Me” pre-school gymnastics class at Maine-ly Gymnastics in Augusta, Maine. In 2000, Young and her family moved to Atlanta, Ga., where she trained at the Georgia All-Stars for almost 10 years.

2. Now an Iowa resident, Young and her family moved to begin her training at Chow’s Gymnastics — the same facility where World and Olympic Champions Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas trained. Young, under the tutelage of Liang Chow, trained at Chow’s Gymnastics from August of 2010 to January of 2013, when she began training at Triad Gymnastics under Tom and Donna Moretti.

3. Young is a three-time level 10 Junior Olympics national qualifier and a five-time level 10 regional qualifier. In 2014, Young was ranked ninth nationally for the floor exercise and placed seventh and fifth in the all-around and floor exercise competitions, respectively, at the 2012 Junior Olympics national championships.

4. Young also competed multiple times at the IGI Chicago Style Meet, where the Cyclones matched up against Northern Illinois and Yale, before becoming a Cyclone. In 2011, she placed fourth in the uneven bars before finishing atop the podium on the vault in 2012 at the IGI Chicago Style.

5. The Young family currently resides in West Des Moines, where Young attended high school at Valley High. Haylee’s sister, Molly, is also a level10 at Chow’s Gymnastics — following in the footsteps of her older sister.
