Screen Scene Thursday: Straight Outta Compton

N.W.A is one of the most influential rap groups of all time, up there with the Wu-Tang Clan, no question about it. Many in our generation have come to idolize the ’80s and ’90s rap era, but many of us were too young to appreciate N.W.A during their rise. We are in luck, however, as the rap group is coming out with a biopic recalling the group’s influential rise to the top and their solidification as some of the greatest.

The Red Band trailer was released earlier this week, which included a nostalgic introduction by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube reflecting on where they came from. The trailer itself, however, isn’t as calm and mature as its introduction. The film looks like it will be a reckless, fast paced and dramatic telling of the musical career of the five original members, which is a perfect description of their story.

The group originally consisted of DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube and possibly Arabian Prince. MC Ren joined in 1988 as Arabian Prince was leaving, so it will be interesting to see if the film touches base on those members heavily.

One of the most fascinating parts of the biopic is that Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea, Jr., will be portraying his father. That will be both an interesting insight into his father’s early life as well as an eerily accurate portrayal of Cube during that time.

The film will be released Aug. 14 and will also star Paul Giamatti as the group’s tyrannical manager Jerry Heller. Check out the trailer below:
