Pete Carroll still believes in his questionable play call

Almost a week after the Super Bowl featuring the New England Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks that ended in a very shocking manner, Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll continues to defend his decision about Seattle’s final play of the game.

Carroll firmly stands behind his decision to throw the ball in the final minutes of the game rather than to run the ball. Just about everybody in the stadium expected Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch to pound it in to the end zone. However, Russell Wilson threw an interception to the Patriots’ Malcolm Butler on the one-yard line, consequently giving the game to the Patriots.

Every moment following that play has been criticizing Carroll for not running the ball, however Carroll continues to support his decision and believes that throwing the ball was the best thing to do. In a report from USA Today, Carroll said that if the catch had been completed it would have been a completely different story. However, Carroll did say that if he had to redo the play, he might have done some things differently. But if the Patriots had not intercepted the pass, the Seahawks would have either scored on that play or they would have just given the ball to Marshawn Lynch, who would have driven hard for the touchdown.

Either he is just trying to defend a very big mistake or he really believes he made the right decision. Carroll insists that throwing the ball was the best option at the time, and that the play was just not executed correctly and that’s where things went wrong. While Carroll can be put to blame for the play call, some fingers can be pointed toward Russell Wilson for not making a very great pass, making it much easier for Butler to intercept.

Carroll told USA Today that it took a couple of days for the loss to really sink in and how that play call will be viewed not just in the near future, but that play will be brought up for years to come. That is to be expected, but Carroll can still be very proud of taking the Seahawks to the Super Bowl for two consecutive years.

Congratulations to the Patriots for making plays when it mattered the most, but credit to the Seahawks for making some incredible plays to put themselves into a position to win. Whether fans wanted the Patriots or Seahawks to win, everyone can appreciate that it was a great game that literally came down to the final minute.
