Screen Scene Thursday: “The Gunman”

Sam Vander Forest

Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba. Those three names alone can spark interest in any film, even if it’s about a stick. The three Oscars and three Golden Globes between them already tell you that despite this coming off as purely another action film, it will still deliver powerhouse performances across the board.

The international trailer was released this week, but how do you describe the look of the movie so far? Here’s how. It’s like “Bourne Ultimatum” made a baby with “Taken,” but with a romantic spin. I say that not only because the action looks beyond realistic, but because the director of the film is also the director of the first “Taken” film, which is the good one.

The story follows Jim Terrier, played by Sean Penn, who is a former special forces soldier trying to clear his name after realizing the mistakes he has made in the service of his country. The trailer will likely resonate well with audiences, as the plot seems reminiscent of Jason Bourne trying to clear his name and escape being terminated by the organization that created him.

The film is adapted from the novel “The Prone Gunman” by Jean-Patrick Manchette, which was written in 1981 and translated into English in 2002. The movie already shows some variances from the novel, but the fact still remains that it will be a fun, modern interpretation of an old-French-style crime novel.

The explosions and web of lies hits theaters on March 20, 2015.
