The Lowdown

The ISU women’s basketball team had an exciting finish in the final round of the 2014 St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Tournament in Moraga, Calif. on Nov. 29. In a game that went right down to the wire, the Cyclones suffered their first loss of the year, falling to host school St. Mary’s, 67-63.

Iowa State (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) was a step behind St. Mary’s in the first half, but not by much. The Cyclones trailed by eight early, but rallied late in the half. Heading into the locker room, the Cyclones only trailed 27-30.

The beginning of the second half was much of the same, with St. Mary’s going on a big 9-0 run to start the second half. Iowa State fought back, however, and was trailing by just one with four minutes left in the game. In the end, though, it just wasn’t enough.

The Cyclones struggled from the field against St. Mary’s, shooting only 35.5 percent. They also only attempted 10 total free throws, something coach Bill Fennelly has been focusing on in recent weeks.
