Protested Iowa State vs. Texas Tech volleyball match to be replayed Nov. 26

The ISU volleyball team has struggled on the road in conference play with a 2-6 record, but its road woes may improve without even leaving the confines of Ames.

On Oct. 18 in Lubbock, Texas, Iowa State lost a five-set match versus Texas Tech. According to a statement released by the Big 12 conference, the match was protested by Iowa State in response to what was deemed a misapplication of a rule at the point of the match where Texas Tech was leading 8-5 in the fifth set.

The NCAA Rules Committee ruled that Iowa State’s protest was valid and the match will be resumed from the point of protest on Nov. 26 at 12 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa – the same day that Iowa State and Texas Tech are scheduled to compete at the same location at 6:30 p.m.

“Because the contest is being played in Ames instead of carried out at its original location in Lubbock, the replayed match will not be open to the public in order to maintain as neutral an atmosphere as possible,” the statement said. “Only necessary game management personnel and administrators will be permitted to be in attendance.”

The statement did not indicate what rule was misapplied and Iowa State has chosen to not comment thus far.

Counting the Oct. 18 match as it was originally recorded, Iowa State stands at 15-10 overall and at 7-7 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech stands at 15-12 overall and at 3-9 in Big 12 play.

The announcement of the replayed match comes at a critical juncture of the season for RPI No. 12 Iowa State as it looks to strengthen its resume to become one of 16 teams to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
