ISU cross country runner Crystal Nelson was named the Division 1 Women’s National Athlete of the Week, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associaion announced Monday.

Nelson’s most recent award arrives after her top-place performance at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational Oct. 17.

Nelson defeated three NCAA track champions and the winners of the Roy Griak, Battle in Beantown, Paul Short, and Washington Invitationals.

Nelson’s 19:35 time tied the fastest time ever for an ISU runner at the event. Her time was four seconds slower than the course record set by Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth last year.

Next on the schedule for Nelson and Iowa State is the Big 12 Championships at Kansas’s Rim Rock Farm Nov. 1.
