John Oliver and Last Week Tonight offer a refreshing take on news

Christian Dahl

Many of you might know him from his role as a correspondent on The Daily Show but with the new HBO weekly satirical news show “Last Week Tonight”; John Oliver is now in the spotlight. Taking place every Sunday night at 11pm, Oliver takes his spot at his desk and reports (patronizes) everything that took place over the last week.

While you have been hearing the same stories all week, Oliver likes to take a different route and tell the sides you probably have not been hearing. His show airs once a week, while many similar shows (The Daily Show, Colbert Report) take place nightly. A downside to much less frequent shows is that he is often beat to the punch by the nightly gigs, and has a little bit of a harder time hitting the time sensitive material.

What the show lacks due to the structure of the show and airing schedule, he certainly makes up for in other areas. Giving Oliver and his writing team a whole week to prepare makes for much more thorough, in depth monologues. While most nightly show’s monologues and stories run around 40 seconds to a minute, some of Oliver’s hit up 16 minutes in length and leave no stone unturned.

A few examples of organizations and ideas he has taken shots at include The Miss America Pageant, Student Loans and For-Profit Colleges (college students need to see this), Net Neutrality, and Misleading Nutrient Labels. Oliver does a great job at not just blindly making fun of news stories and certain organizations, his research team is always sure to provide him with enough evidence and numbers to make his appear convincing.

We know not a whole lot of college students have an HBO subscription. With that said, a great part of the show is virtually all of his episodes are available for free on YouTube. With Oliver taking the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine on September 25, now is a great time to start watching. Check out his take on college debt on the link below.
