Cyclone Hockey comeback falls short

Cyclone Hockey couldn’t complete a comeback against the Oklahoma Sooners Oct. 3 at Blazers Ice Arena, losing 3-2 in a shootout.

The first period was scoreless, but not without scoring chances. No. 4 Oklahoma (4-1, 2-1 ACHA) went on the power play twice because of two Kody Reuter penalties. The Sooners spent most the four power play minutes in the Cyclone zone. Scott Ismund stopped all of Oklahoma’s shots to keep the game level.

The No. 5 ranked Cyclones (6-3, 1-2 ACHA) opened up the second period with a power play, but they could not capitalize. Oklahoma forward Jordan Greenberg broke the stalemate with a burst of speed in the neutral zone. He burned the Cyclone defenders and found the top left of the net. Then, with 19.4 seconds left in the period, the Sooners found the net again to extend their lead, 2-0.

Cyclone forward Trevor Lloyd cut the lead to one late in the second period on a power play and J.P. Kascsak knotted the game late in the third period.

In the shootout, both teams missed their first attempts, but Oklahoma put in its second attempt to pull ahead. That would be the game, as the Cyclones went on to miss all three of their attempts.

The Cyclones wrap up their series against Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Blazers Ice Center in Norman, Okla.
