Miss America hazing

Sam Vander Forest

Oh, greek hazing. What a topic. The age-old tradition of making someone drink ‘til they die, sit on washing machines to point out their physical imperfections and other insane tasks all to join a brotherhood or sisterhood. Greek hazing has become less prominent today, as both universities and national greek organizations have cracked down on the subject, but in certain places it is definitely still prominent.

The reason it’s been brought back to the forefront of the news is because of the Miss America Pageant that just took place. It was tipped off after the competition that the winner, Kira Kazantsev, was kicked out of her sorority for extreme hazing and abusive behavior. Kazantsev was the president of the recruitment committee for her sorority Alpha Phi at Hofstra University in New York.

After news sources were tipped off about the subject from inside sources, the university confirmed that they had removed her from the sorority, and the Miss America Foundation said that she had been “fully transparent” about the situation and her past.

It just makes you wonder what our society’s priorities really are, if an event and an organization like this can have such a profound effect on people and still be so loved. It’s also fairly ironic that Kazantsev’s platform during the Miss America competition was titled “Love Shouldn’t Hurt: Protecting Women Against Domestic Violence.”
