“You wanna be on top?” is a phrase every Top Model fan has heard spoken by the top model herself, Trya Banks. It may not be “America’s Next Top Model,” but it is as close as Iowa State might get.

More than 100 students showed up to Trend Magazine’s modeling tryouts Sept. 9 at Coover Hall. Trend Magazine is a student-run publication that concentrates on topics like fashion, beauty and lifestyle. A new issue is released every fall and spring semester, and Trend is currently working on its 17th edition.

For the tryout, the participants were encouraged to wear outfits that reflected their personal style with hopes to impress Trend Magazine executive team. Each potential model took two headshots and one full body shot during the casting event.

In each issue of Trend, the executive board chooses between 30 and 40 models to be featured in the magazine. The Trend directors make all of the decisions regarding model casting once all the photos are taken. Both men and women will be selected for the issue, and the selected models will be receiving an email if they are selected.

Raina Edel, senior in apparel, merchandising and design and the Trend for Men co-director, said the amount of models is dependent on the type of shoots Trend plans to executive for that particular issue.

“We get concept ideas and that forms how many models we are going to have,” Edel said.

Taylor Richardson, senior in apparel, merchandising and design, has been involved with Trend for three years and is the current fashion forecasting director. She said was impressed with the number of potential models.

“This is the largest turnout we’ve ever had,” Richardson said. “I’m excited to start working on the issue.”

The directors do not reveal the exact type of models they are looking for, but for every new issue they strive for a diversity of looks.

“We always want fresh faces,” Gwen Campion, the assistant fashion director for the on-location shoot and senior in apparel merchandising, said.

Trend’s directors said the large turnout will help to ensure that Trend will have a variety of unique looks and styles for this upcoming issue. The models selected from this casting will be featured in the fall 2014 edition, which will be released at the end of the semester.
