Hockey wins in overtime, splits Huntsville series

With the roster being split into two squads for this weekend’s games vs the Huntsville Havoc, it was the second squad’s turn to take the ice Saturday night.

The Cyclones controlled the puck early in the first period and benefited by scoring three goals.

Early into the second period, the Havoc pressured the cyclones and scored its first goal on a power play. 13 seconds later they scored again.

The Cyclones headed into the third period with a 3-2 lead but could not hold it. Huntsville’s Larry Barreta scored just under seven minutes into the third, evening the score.

Iowa State’s Zack Johnson scored on a diving goal for his second of the night, giving them the 4-3 lead.

Shortly after Johnson’s goal, Zach Kuta from the Havoc scored, evening the score once again and eventually sending the game into overtime.

The Cyclones won the game on a power-play goal from Dominic Toigo.

The Cyclones evened the series 1-1 and will play at home again on Sept. 12 and 13 against the North Iowa Bulls.
