Iowa State 4 way baseball tournament

Baseball has been somewhat synonymous with American culture and now the Iowa State baseball team has undergone a culture change of its own to try spice things up.

The first Cap Timm Classic went off without a hitch except for a minor rainstorm on Saturday, which caused the last game to be cancelled after the Cyclones beat Kansas State 7-2.

The Iowa State baseball team started a new tradition with the first 4-team baseball tournament this past weekend. Along with Iowa State and Kansas State, Illinois State and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater were in attendance.

The ISU club baseball team has been a topic of some debate in the world of ISU athletics since the team was discontinued after the 2000-2001 season due to budget cuts.

Team president Elliot Frey mentioned how this new concept was a big deal to pump new blood into the club.

“Yeah we’re excited to have this event and the teams coming in from over the Midwest,” Frey said “This could be very big for us.”

The tournament went off without a hitch and the atmosphere made you feel like a kid at the ballpark. The sun was shining early Sunday morning before your Cyclones were preparing for the Illinois State Redbirds squad.

The tournament makes you wonder if soon with the new TV deals emerging for athletic departments on the turn of the decade should it be time to bring back baseball as a university funded sport. The Athletic department is at an all time high with total revenue of 48,469,929 million dollars.

One quick note Iowa State is also the only big XII team that does not have a University baseball team.

These are the only games they will be playing this fall and they will resume play this spring for their normally scheduled games.

The tournament could be an indicator of future events to come to Iowa state baseball then its safe to say that there could be a bright future.
