According to documents available via Iowa’s Open Records Act, between the dates of April 1, 2013, and March 31, 2014, Iowa State blew the whistle on itself to the NCAA 27 times to report infractions.

The NCAA has taken issue with Iowa State in recent years, specifically over a reported 1,484 impermissible phone calls made between 2008-2011, which resulted in 79 rules violations that the NCAA took under consideration for possible punishment.

Iowa State opened an internal investigation at the time in which it reviewed 750,000 phone calls made by various athletic coaches over those years.

After the investigation, Iowa State self-imposed a two-year probationary period that included recruiting sanctions on coaching visits and the number of phone calls allowed to be made to potential recruits.

The NCAA found Iowa State’s offering of self-reprimand acceptable, closing the matter without imposing further penalties.

All of the 27 violations reported by Iowa State between 2013-14 were classified as minor infractions by the NCAA, so when it comes to severe reprimands, either self-imposed or from the NCAA, Iowa State’s proverbial wrist remains safe for now.
