Cyclones win one, lose two against Cowgirls

The ISU softball team looked at this weekend for a turn around in luck against Oklahoma State. Friday looked promising for the Cyclones with a win.

Iowa State started off strong with the first Big 12 win of the season. This first base run was by sophomore Brittany Gomez in thanks to an over-thrown pitch that allowed Gomez to score the first run of the game.

Throughout the entire game, it was a tight match between the two teams. However, the Cyclones pulled out another insurance run. Iowa State won the first game 2-0.

The second day of the series was made into a double header because of a chance of rain on Sunday.

The second game of the series did not do in Iowa State’s favor. It ended in just five innings and the Cyclones lost 11-0.

In the final game on Saturday, the Cyclones could not fight the Cowgirls. Oklahoma State put an inexperienced pitcher in the second game so Iowa State took full advantage of the situation.

Sophomore Aly Cappaert hit in two RBIs in the first inning for Iowa State. Then Jorden Spendlove hit a homer right afterwards. Oklahoma State was not going to let Iowa State off so easy, however. Oklahoma State hit a home run as well as and put the Cowgirls up 4-3.

The score was close throughout the game. The game ended in nine innings with the Cowgirls coming out on top. The final score was 7-6. The Cyclones are now 18-17 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12.

Iowa State will take on in-state rival Drake Wednesday on the Bulldogs’ home turf starting at 5 p.m.
