Cyclone Hockey takes first game against Central Oklahoma

The Cyclone Hockey team extended its winning streak at home to 12 games against Central Oklahoma in dramatic fashion.

In their final regular season series of the year, the No. 9 Cyclones (31-8-3, 14-5-1 CSCHL) and No. 11 Bronchos (24-13-3) remained tied through three periods and overtime on Friday.  But the Cyclones were able to sink the Bronchos in the ninth round of the shootout to win 3-2.

An intercepted ISU pass by UCO forward Michael Rivera led to a Bronchos’ goal by forward Shane Khalaf late in the first period. Iowa State outshot Central Oklahoma by six in first but failed to score.

Only 54 seconds in the second period, the Cyclones tied the game with a five-on-four power-play goal by forward J.P. Kascask.  Forward Trevor Lloyd notched his 13th goal of season later in the second to give the Cyclones the lead.

The Bronchos tied the game in the third period with a five-on-four power-play goal of their own by forward Sam Rice. Rice’s goal was all the offense both teams had on the ice in third, sending the game into overtime.

After both teams were unable to score in overtime, the game went into a shootout. Kascsak clinched the win for the Cyclones when he shot the puck past UCO goalie Caldwell in the ninth round.

Iowa State will take on Central Oklahoma and celebrate senior night tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
