The No. 17 Iowa State wrestling team went into Cedar Falls on Feb. 8 looking for their second straight dual win in two weeks. However, the Cyclones met more than they expected and fell to Northern Iowa 24-13.

The No. 5 Panthers were a perfect 9-0 on the year headed into Saturday’s in-state rivalry. The Panthers, behind a sold out crowd at UNI’s West Gym, took down the Cyclones with relative ease.

No. 2 Kyven Gadson started out the night for the Cyclones and took control of the match early. The All-American never looked back, defeating UNI’s Basil Minto 11-3. With the win, Gadson has now won 26 dual meets in a row, a record for the Waterloo native.

The Cyclones then struggled to get anything going after Gadson’s match. They dropped five-straight matches to the Panthers, and were down 21-4 after six matches.

Iowa State then tried to get the momentum to swing back its way. The Cyclones came up with three-straight wins from John Nicholson, Mike Moreno and Tanner Weatherman.

In the end, however, it wasn’t enough, with the Panthers sealing the victory. The UNI win marked its first against Iowa State since 2004.

Iowa State will compete next at the NWCA National Duals in Columbus, Ohio.
