Cyclone Hockey swept by No. 1 Arizona State

The Cyclone Hockey team continues its road trip in Arizona against the top team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, Arizona State.

In its two-game series No. 4 Iowa State (18-5-1) was unable to overcome No. 1 Arizona State (21-0-0), losing 5-1 on Monday and 3-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and 26.

In the first game of the series, the Sun Devils scored early in the first period with a goal by forward Troy Scott.

The sticks were quiet on the ice for both teams for the rest of the first period and for all of the second, as defense took over the game. During the span of the first and second period, goalie Matt Cooper blocked 23-of-24 shots on goal and Arizona State goalie Joe D’Elia blocked 14-of-14 shots on goal.

The ISU offense had trouble putting the puck in the back of the net until forward Mark Huber scored 54 seconds into the third period to tie the game 1-1.

Arizona State forward Ryan Ostertag put Arizona State back on top with a goal midway through the third. And with only six minutes left in the third period, Arizona State’s offense exploded.

Arizona State forward Sean Murphy started the quick onslaught of goals with a goal at the 5:16 mark of the period. After Murphy’s goal, Arizona State had goals from forwards Zachary Holstorm and Danny McAuliffe to put the Sun Devils up 5-1.

It was more of the same in game two of the series, as the Sun Devils continued the offensive attack they had late in game one with three goals in the first period.

Cooper, who had started both games of the series, was pulled after the first period and was replaced by ISU goalie Scott Ismond.

With Ismond behind the net, the Cyclones were able to stop the Sun Devils from piling on more goals. However, the Cyclones were unable to score themselves and ended the game with a 3-0 loss.

Iowa State will face No. 24 West Virginia next on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30 in Morgantown, W.Va.
