Deandre Kane started it with two free throws and ended with a turnover, but during he was a major force.

It was a 27-0 run closing a dominant first half in a 110-51 win from the ISU mens basketball team against the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

“I thought we really followed the game plan,” said ISU coach Fred Hoiberg. “I was a little nervous, you always are after you have a couple big emotional wins like we’ve had this past week.

“But I’ll tell you, our guys really came ready to practice the last couple days and that’s the thing I’m most impressed with them. They didn’t let those other two games get to their heads.”

During the nearly seven and a half minute run that put the game out of reach, Kane tallied seven points, five rebounds and two assists with the one turnover. He finished with 20 points, making six of seven shots, both 3-point attempts and six of eight free throws with eight rebounds and four assists.

“[We were] staying focused, staying in our principles on defense, executing what we need to execute and sharing the ball out there getting guys open shots and playing unselfish,” Kane said. “We came out ready today and had a good week of practice and it carried over.”

Iowa State put the game out of reach quickly, finishing the first half on a 33-4 run and opened up the second half on a 17-5 run, making it 69-22 with just more than 15 minutes left in the game. Kane, Melvin Ejim and Georges Niang played limited minutes in the second half (none more than eight minutes) and it was a chance for the bench players to see extended playing time.

Ejim finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists while Niang had nine points and four rebounds.

Freshman guard Monte Morris had a chance to see his minutes as the primary ball handler increase with the starters on the bench, which was a chance for him to work against a UMKC full court press for the entire second half. He finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, but most importantly zero turnovers.

“It’s good to see that. We saw zone and I thought he handled it very well tonight,” Hoiberg said. “We saw obviously a lot of man to man as well and I thought our guys handled the situation well, they read what defense they were in and we made the right plays pretty much the majority of the game.”

For the first time this season, every Cyclone player was in the scoring column, including walk-on Tyler Ellerman, who finished with five points and six rebounds. Five players finished in double digits. Sherron Dorsey-Walker led the scoring barrage in the second half, tallying 17 points, making six of his seven shots and added five rebounds and two assists.

Iowa State next plays in one week on Dec. 2 against Auburn at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
