The Windy City Collegiate Classic proved to be named appropriately.

The ISU women’s golf team finished one stroke behind the fifth-place finisher and carded a 290 in the windy conditions of the final round of play to place sixth at the Windy City Collegiate Classic on Tuesday in Evanston, Ill.

Sophomore Cajsa Persson led the Cyclones by locking up her second-straight top-10 finish, bringing her career total to five. Persson went one-under and tied Stanford’s Lauren Kim for fourth place with an overall score of 212. That low 54-hole score is tied for the ISU school record.

“Sharing [the record] is pretty cool,” Persson said. “It’s something to be proud of.”

Iowa State began the first round with a team score of 290 and carded a 288 in the second round. The Cyclones finished round three with another score of 290 and its overall score was 868, which was one stroke behind Northwestern’s score of 867.

Junior Chonlada Chayanun shot a one-under round of 70 on Tuesday to spring her into a tie for 18th place with a score of 218. She also made 27 putts on the day.

“I went in wanting to learn from my mistakes from the first two rounds,” Chayanun said on her game mentality this tournament. “I was able to learn and I was really happy with my putts.”

Seniors Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks both tied for 29th place with scores of 221 at the event. On-iam had a score of 220 and Thammaraks scored a 219 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational last week in Albuquerque, N.M. Thammaraks placed 10th in the last tournament as well and On-iam placed 11th there.

“I didn’t hit my driver very well and couldn’t get any momentum going, which made it harder to score [on Tuesday,]” Thammaraks said. “You can’t win if you don’t hit the fairway, but I’m really proud of myself and how the team fought back.”

Although, the Cyclones didn’t place higher than they did in their last tournament, Thammaraks was still happy with the result and the team spirits were good.

“Shot for shot, the team did really good. It was really windy out there, but we beat some better ranked teams,” Thammaraks said.

The ISU women’s golf team’s next event will be a trip to Austin, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 13, for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
