The Cy-Hawk trophy is headed back to Iowa City.

Iowa (2-1) beat Iowa State (0-2) 27-21 on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium to recapture the trophy after the Cyclones had won the matchup the previous two seasons.

The Hawkeyes struck first when quarterback Jake Rudock connected with receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley from five yards out with 12:07 to play in the second quarter. Iowa kicker Mike Meyer added a field goal with 1:43 to play in the first half to take a 10-0 lead.

Attempting to draw closer before the half, ISU quarterback Sam Richardson was intercepted by Iowa linebacker James Morris with less than a minute to play in the first. The Hawkeyes eventually settled for a 38-yard field goal for a 13-0 halftime lead.

Iowa State had 63 yards of total offense in the first half to Iowa’s 186. Iowa running back Mark Weisman out-gained the Cyclones by himself in the first half with 77 yards on the ground.

The Cyclones got into the game with 5:28 to play in the third quarter when Richardson connected with receiver Quenton Bundrage on 67-yard pass to make it 13-7.

The Hawkeyes responded quickly, though, when Rudock hit Jacob Hillyer for a 26-yard touchdown on the subsequent drive. Iowa went ahead by three scores with a Rudock keeper for a touchdown that gave it a 27-7 lead with 7:05 to play.

Richardson hit Bundrage on a 26-yard pass to make it 27-14 late in the game and the Cyclones recovered an onside kick, but Richardson was intercepted and the recovery went for naught.

With 2:26 to play, Richardson found Bundrage for a third time in the end zone to draw within 27-21. That score came too late for the Cyclones as Iowa recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran the clock down to seven seconds on the punt.

Iowa State ran one play, but was unable to do anything with laterals.
