Men’s golf tied for ninth, Fernandez sixth at ASU

The Cyclone men’s golf team finished the first round of the ASU Thunderbird Invite tied for ninth place with Arizona with a score of 290. Scott Fernandez led the team with an individual score if 69, tied for sixth.

The meet is led by New Mexico, with a score of 276, followed by San Diego State (281), UNLV (283), and California and Oregon State tying for fourth place (284).
 
California’s Michael Kim, the favorite to win the star-studded lineup of the tournament, is tied for sixth place with Fernandez at 2-under par.
 
The Cyclones’ No. 2 golfer Sam Daley finished tied with Zach Steffen with a score of 73, putting both of them tied for 39th in the meet. Blake Waller finished with a score of 75 to wrap up the scorecard for the Cyclones.
 
Oregon State’s Nick Chianello led all golfers with a staggering 7-under par finish (64). Both Tom Berry (San Diego State) and Victor Perez (New Mexico) shot scores of 66 to tie for second.
 
The ASU Thunderbird Invite will continue Saturday with the first tee time of the second round starting 8 a.m. Pacific time.
