Scott Fernandez finished his final round two-under par to finish tied for second and helped the Cyclones finish seventh in a competitive field of 18 teams at the ASU Thunderbird Invite.

The meet was won by No. 33 UNLV (283-283-277=843), which had a seven-under final round to propel itself to a win. No. 1 California (284-282-278=844) also had a big final day, going six-under and finishing second.

New Mexico, the meet leader for more than two-thirds of the meet, went four-over par on it’s final day to drop to fourth place (276-286-288=850). The Lobos were ranked No. 3 in the nation.

The Cyclones finished the tournament with consistency, dropping 285 for the second straight round (290-285-285=860) to finish ahead of three teams currently ranked higher than No. 91 Iowa State – No. 44 Arizona State, No. 62 Arizona, and No. 64 UC Davis.

Nick Chianello finished the tournament with medalist honors, going 11-under par to beat out Fernandez by one stroke. Fernandez tied for second with California’s Brandon Hagy with scores of 203.

Fernandez is again moving up the record boards, with his 54-hole round of 203 reaching second all-time behind former teammate and multiple Cyclone record-holder Nate McCoy’s round of 202.

Sam Daley finished second on the Cyclone scorecard, carding a total of 217 to finish tied for 33rd individually. Collin Foster improved on his first round 6-over par campaign to finish his final two rounds two-over par, carding an 8-over par 220.

Zach Steffen finished out the scorecard with rounds of 73, 75 and 74 to finish at 222 and tied for 58th individually.

The team will have their closest roadtrip of the year for their next tournament April 13-14 in Iowa City. The Hawkeye Invitational will be the last regular-season tournament before the Big 12 Championships April 22-24.
