Cyclone golfers finish tied for sixth in Iowa City

The ISU men’s golf team finished tied for sixth in a field of 12 teams at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational.

Scott Fernandez led the Cyclones, finishing fifth individually at one-under par (75-69-71=215). Sam Daley finished second on the team tying for 28th overall (74-76-75=225).

The Cyclones struggled at the bottom of the lineup, with Collin Foster (78-74-74=226) and Blake Waller (80-77-75=232) finishing in the bottom half of competition. 

The team tied Washington State for sixth in a divided field, with the bottom six teams finishing within eight strokes of each other, and the top six divided by 30 strokes. 

Kansas took the meet going 3-over par (286-290-291=867), which was 30 strokes better than the 33-over par Cyclones (307-295-295=897).

Iowa was the only other team in realistic contention for the top spot, going 4-over par (294-290-284=868). Both Charlotte and Minnesota tied for third at 16-over par and Nebraska finished fifth at 23-over par.

Chris Gilbert of Kansas and Steven Ihm of Iowa took medalist honors at the meet, going 5-under par. Stan Gautier of Kansas went 4-under par for third, and Alex Gaugert of Minnesota finished one stroke better than Fernandez to finish fourth.

The Cyclones will wrap up the regular season schedule with the Big 12 Championships starting April 22 and finishing April 24.
