Cyclones struggle, tie for eighth heading into final round

The ISU men’s golf team struggled in its first two rounds at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational, tying Penn State and Notre Dame for eighth place in a field of 12 teams.

The Cyclones, who shot rounds of 307 and 295 to go 26-over par, ended on somewhat of a high note, with all four score contributors birdieing the final hole of the day. The first two rounds also featured 55 bogey-or-worse holes.

The team was led by Scott Fernandez, who recovered from a first round score of 75 to tie for sixth with a second round score of 69, finishing at 144. Sam Daley was the team’s No. 2, finishing tied for 27th (74-76=150).

Kansas leads the tournament heading into the final round, finishing even-par. Meet host Iowa is in second place, going 8-over par through two rounds. Minnesota finishes out the top-3, trailing Iowa by two strokes at 10-over par.

Individually, Minnesota’s Alex Gaugert and Kansas’ Stan Gautier lead the meet, going 5-under par. Kansas’ Chris Gilbert and Iowa’s Steven Ihm tied for third, going 4-under par.

The bottom half of the competition have a chance to improve tomorrow, with only eight strokes separating sixth place from 12th. The top half of the field is father separated, with sixth place Washington State trailing the lead by 20 strokes.

The final round of the Hawkeye Invite will continue tomorrow with the first tee times starting at 9 a.m.
