The Lowdown

Call it deja vu for Iowa State.

After losing to Kansas in overtime in January, Iowa State (19-9, 9-6 Big 12) did it again Monday night. Despite controlling the game late, Iowa State allowed No. 6 Kansas (24-4, 12-3) to force overtime with two late free throws at the end of regulation and eventually fell in overtime 108-96.

The Cyclones led 87-82 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation, but were outscored 8-3 down the stretch with all eight of the Jayhawks’ points coming from guard Elijah Johnson.

The loss for Iowa State came in front of 14,376 fans and despite making a single game school record 17 3-pointers, including six from guard Tyrus McGee.

X Factor

Elijah Johnson — The Jayhawks were led by a big second half from Johnson, who scored 39 points overall with six 3-pointers. Johnson scored 27 points alone in the second half and helped Kansas force overtime with his late-game performance.

Turning Point

With 2:58 remaining in overtime, KU forward Travis Releford hit a 3-pointer to push Kansas ahead 97-92. The Jayhawks would eventually lead 100-92, an insurmountable lead for the Cyclones.

After Iowa State went on a 4-0 run to attempt to get back in the game, Kansas got a crushing 3-pointer from Johnson at the end of the shot clock to take the air out of Hilton Coliseum.

By the Numbers

17 — Iowa State made 17 3-pointers on 17-of-41 shooting beyond the arc. The total set an ISU school record for 3-pointers in a game, knocking 16 3-pointers against Northern Colorado last season down one on the list.

22 — ISU guard Tyrus McGee scored a career high 22 points behind six 3-pointers, going 8-of-15 from the field and 6-of-8 beyond the arc.

3 — The loss to Kansas on Monday was the third overtime loss for Iowa State this season and the second to the Jayhawks. The other overtime loss for the Cyclones came against Texas on the road.
