The ISU wrestling team competed in session one of the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday. The weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the tournament.

Midlands is one of the largest and most highly competitive tournaments in all of collegiate wrestling. Saturday saw 14 Cyclone wrestlers take to the mat in search of individual titles.

Session one concluded with seven Cyclones still in contention for third place or better, but just one still competing for an individual championship.

ISU redshirt sophomore Kyven Gadson, ranked No. 16 at 197 pounds, is still in the hunt for a title. Gadson defeated Nick Mills of Columbia and Braden Atwood of Purdue on his way to the round of eight. He will face Pittsburgh’s Matt Wilps in session two to see who will move on to the semi-finals.

Aside from Gadson, six other Cyclones are in the running for third place or better. Max Mayfield at 149, Logan Molina at 157, Michael Moreno at 165, Mikey England and Tanner Weatherman at 174 and No. 18 Matt Gibson at heavyweight all remain on the backside of their respective brackets.

Sessions two and three of the Midlands are yet to come, leading up to the finals on Sunday.
