Sasikarn On-lam had the best meet of her season this weekend, leading the ISU women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Mercedes Benz Colligate in Knoxville, Tenn.

“I wanted to commit, and I had confidence, and I think that made all the difference,” On-lam said about the improvement in her game this week.

On-lam had a score of 218, placing her 11th individually, which was the highest placing by an ISU golfer.

“We had some moments where we played really well. We didn’t start out how we wanted to,” said ISU coach Christie Martens. “[On-lam] had a great day and we had some good moments.”

After a total team score of 886, Iowa State finished in seventh place. This was its lowest finish of the season but Iowa State is still ranked 14th in the nation.

“The most important thing is not the ranking right now; it’s just coming together as a team,” Martens said. “The ranking doesn’t do much, it’s how we play, improve and work together — we want to get better every day.”

The golfers will have another chance to work together as they practice and prepare to improve before their next meet in two weeks.

Although, On-lam had her best meet of the season, other ISU players did not feel as confident about it.

“Overall, I don’t think I played that well […] definitely room for improvement and I hope to continue to get better everyday,” said Prima Thammaraks.

Iowa State finished stronger this meet, reducing its score in the third round to 290 after two rounds of 298. This was one of the things the team and wanted to work on after the Windy City Collegiate Classic.

On-lam helped the team pull off the stronger finish that moved it from eighth in the second round to its final placing in seventh.

“I felt really confident before I went out,” On-Iam said. “I wanted to have fun, help the score, and play some smart golf.”

On-lam and the ISU women’s golf team will compete again Oct. 26 to 28 at the Landfill Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
