The ISU women’s golf team, now ranked No. 15 in the nation, will compete at the Mercedes Benz Women’s Collegiate on Oct. 12–14 in Knoxville, Tenn.

This tournament will be hosted at the Holston Hills Country Club, a course ranked in Golf Week’s Top 100 courses.

The course is unique in that it was designed by a Scottish designer Donald Ross to be a links course, or coastal course.

“It’s very unusual to have a links course in this area,” said Tom Seymour, an employee at the Holston Hills Country Club course.

The three-day tournament, hosted by Tennessee, will feature 16 teams playing in a 54-hole meet.

Iowa State hopes to correct some of the mistakes that affected its last meet and to finish stronger in Knoxville. In its previous meet, it found itself in third place but fell to fifth after not finishing with the scores it had wanted in the third round.

“We have practiced a lot [to prepare for this tournament],” said freshman Cajsa Persson. “It’s always fun to go to tournaments and to be with the team.”

Senior Punpaka Phuntumabamrung is confident that the team is more prepared this week for the competition ahead.

“We have worked on what we need to work on [most] — our weaknesses,” Phuntumabamrung said. “That should prepare us for this weekend.”

The ISU women’s golf team started the season with a first-place finish at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational. The team came in fifth at its second meet, the Windy City Collegiate Classic, after a weaker finish in the third round.

“I hope we can play better in [the Mercedes Benz Women’s Collegiate] — we need to be patient and play consistent,” Phuntumabamrung said.

The ISU women’s golf team is currently No. 15 in the nation after its first two meets. The team hopes for a strong finish in its third meet of the season.
