Iowa State falls to West Virginia in first-ever meeting

The ISU soccer team played West Virginia for the first time in school history on Sunday at the new Cyclone Sports Complex.

Iowa State (9-7, 1-4 Big 12) took on the leaders of the Big 12, West Virginia (9-3-3, 5-0 Big 12) in an offensive battle between the teams. The Cyclones fell to the Mountaineers 3-2.

The first goal came right away for the Cyclones. Junior forward Jennifer Dominguez scored her tenth and eleventh goal of the season in the game.

Iowa State’s first goal came in the second minute. The assist was awarded to junior midfielder Meredith Skitt. The second was scored in the 85th minute and was assisted by junior defender Jessica Stewart.

West Virginia’s first goal came from freshman forward Kelsie Maloney in the 28th minute with an assist from sophomore forward Kate Schwindel. Junior forward Frances Silva had the second goal in the 57th minute and the third goal in the 70th minute. Both goals were assisted by Schwindel.

Iowa State will next play on Sunday when the team takes on in-state rival Drake at the Cyclone Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
