Fourth-set comeback leads Cyclones to victory

Behind a fourth set comeback the Cyclones couldn’t make in the second, No. 18 Iowa State finished off No. 25 Northern Iowa 27-25 Wednesday night.

Four Cyclones posted 10 kills or more in the 3-1 victory as Iowa State avenged the 0-3 sweep it suffered last season to the in-state rival.

Victoria Hurtt, Rachel Hockaday, Mackenzie Bigbee and Jamie Straube all finished in double figures, with Hockaday leading the pack with 14.

Setter Alison Landwehr ended her night with 51 assists and reigning Big 12 Libero of the Year Kristen Hahn pitched in 24 digs as well.

In the second set, the Cyclones and Panthers fought back and forth for the lead but Northern Iowa was able to hold on for the final points and win set number two 25-23.

Two sets later, Iowa State was down 17-21 and coach Christy Johnson-Lynch called timeout. The Cyclones found a way to get back into the game and tie it up at 23 a piece with a kill by Hurtt.

The game winner came with a block from Bigbee and Straube to end the match and give the Cyclones their first victory against UNI since 2010.

Iowa State improves to 3-3 with the win, while UNI still leads the all-time series 26-24.

The Cyclones get back in action at Hilton Coliseum Friday with a pair of matches. First up is Eastern Washington at 12:30 with the night cap against Iowa at 6:30.
