Freshman Melissa Youngblut has been dismissed from the ISU women’s basketball team after being charged with assault causing injury.

ISU women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly confirmed Youngblut’s dismissal through an athletic department email from Iowa State.

“We are aware of Melissa’s situation and she has been dismissed from our basketball team,” Fennelly said in his statement.

Youngblut is a freshman and was formerly a standout at Davenport Assumption. She saw playing time in six games this year.

Iowa State and the women’s basketball team said they will not comment further on the situation.
