In the first home dual meet of 2012, Iowa State lost to Missouri 24-11 at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

The meet started at the 125-pound match, which pitted the Cyclones’ Ryak Finch against No. 3 Alan Waters.

Finch, who is ranked 12th at the weight, wrestled timidly against Waters, who had previously beaten him by major decision at the two teams’ Dec. 18 meeting.

A lack of offensive prowess for most of the match by Finch resulted in a 4-0 victory for Waters, who is now 14-1 on the season. Finch drops to 9-4 on the season with the loss.

At 133 pounds, R.J. Hallman took the mat for the Cyclones, who have not had a victory at that weight this seaosn, against the Tigers’ Eric Wilson.

Hallman scored the first points of the dual for the Cyclones with a reversal from the down position in the second period, but Wilson managed the 9-3 decision against the ISU redshirt freshman to give Missouri a 6-0 lead after two.

Luke Goettl came out aggressively for the Cyclones at 141 pounds, notching a takedown in the first minute of the match against the Tigers’ Nicholas Hucke.

Goettl continued his aggressiveness, accumulating over two minutes of riding time with a 6-2 lead heading into the third period. It was there that Goettl continued his intensity with a two-point reversal from the bottom position for the 9-3 decision in the Cyclones’ first victory of the day.

A slow and scoreless first period of the 157-pound match was met with a 11-1 major decision by Missouri’s Drake Houdashelt, who rode Iowa State’s Michael Moreno for the entire second period and received two back points as well during that time.

Iowa State experienced its second victory of the day with team captain Andrew Sorenson’s 20-2 technical fall of Jordan Gagliano at 165 pounds. Sorenson was relentless in his execution of attacks, managing multiple nearfalls throughout the contest en route to the tech fall.

Sorenson is now 18-1 on the season and is 10-0 in dual action.

Mikey England wrestled in Chris Spangler’s absence at 174 after Spangler sustained a concussion at the Midlands Championships in late December.

England, who placed eighth at 174 at the Midlands, went down to the wire and gave up a takedown in the first tiebreaker period to lose 4-2 to Missouri’s Patrick Wright to put Missouri ahead by eight after seven matches.

Boaz Beard took to the home mat for the first time since Dec. 4, losing to No. 16 Mike Larson in a 5-2 decision after giving up a takedown in a tiebreaker period at 184 pounds. Beard, who is ranked 11th at 184, is now 6-2 on the season.

Matt Gibson avenged a 3-2 loss to Devin Mellon on Dec. 18 with a 5-0 victory against his foe at heavyweight, rounding out the Cyclones’ day with a their third victory.

The Cyclones return to action on Friday when they host Virginia Tech. The first match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
