Christofferson, bench help Cyclones breeze past Devilettes

Hallie Christofferson put up her best performance of the season Sunday in the 77-47 victory over Mississippi Valley State. She finished the game with 24 points and eight rebounds.

The play from Christofferson, came from coach Bill Fennelly wanting her to be more aggressive on offense.

“We had a conversation yesterday about the fact that we wanted her to shoot the ball more,” Fennelly said. “She’s such a good kid that, when she misses, she doesn’t want to miss the next one because it hurts her team.”

Fennelly explained to Hallie that sometimes not shooting enough is another form of being selfish. She seemed to have gotten the message. Her 24 points came on 10-15 shooting, the most attempts of anyone on the team.

For the game, Iowa State shot 41 percent, while holding the Devilettes to 27 percent from the field. Ka’neisha Smith and Brittney Lakes were the only MVS players to reach double digits with 11 and 10 points respectively.

With starters Anna Prins and Chelsea Poppens out with injuries, Christofferson spent much of the second half on the bench as the backups got valuable minutes. The bench provided a total of 25 points. Fallon Ellis and Amanda Zimmerman chipped in 11 each. Kelsey Harris scored three points.

Fennelly was particularly pleased with the play of Ellis.

“Fallon gave us really good minutes off the bench and that was encouraging,” Fennelly said. “Most players complain when they don’t play, so when you get the chance, do something with it. Some did and some didn’t.”

This is the Cyclones second win in a row after dropping a game to Michigan earlier in the season. Freshman Brynn Williamson got her first start and finished with 10 points. Freshman point guard Nikki Moody put in nine points as she shot 3-4 from three-point range.

“I think everybody fed off of everyone else’s energy and it got us going,” Christofferson said.
