The No. 9 Cyclones (9-0-1) started the second of their two-game set with No. 11 Oakland with a bang, taking a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of their 4-1 victory, completing the series sweep.

The first goal came just 32 seconds into the first period when freshman forward James Buttermore scored. Only three minutes later, the Cyclones capitalized again with a goal by sophomore forward Jonathon Feavel, and 8:06 into the first period the Cyclones got a third goal courtesy of Rombach, with assists by Buttermore and freshman forward J.P. Kascak.

After that, the Cyclones found themselves in a slump and didn’t score another goal until almost the halfway point of the third period, courtesy of junior forward David Kurbatsky. Feavel, who had the second Cyclone goal, said that if they’re going to slump in any game, that was the way to do it.

“You kind of forget that you still have to compete and still have to maintain that high level, because that’s what got you there,” Feavel said. “We kind of let off the gas in the second period and we got a battle.”

Feavel also had an assist in the game and leads the Cyclones in scoring with eight goals and five assists for a total of 13 points. Coach Al Murdoch said Feavel is one of the hardest workers they have on and off the ice.

“In the offseason, I think he probably worked harder than anybody on the team,” Murdoch said. “I know for a fact that he worked out every day and probably was the most improved player and most well-conditioned player back this fall.”

Junior Paul Karus was the starting goaltender for the Cyclones and stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Karus is the Cyclones’ veteran goalie and is a part of what Murdoch calls one of the best goaltending trios in the nation.

“It’s always helpful when the team gets that many goals right away, but you’ve always got to maintain your focus,” Karus said. “And with this team, they don’t let up and they don’t back down, so it makes my job a whole lot easier.”

They Cyclones’ next game is against No. 22 Arizona at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena on Friday.
