Young Cyclone squad travels to Toledo for second game of the weekend

After a Friday night matchup against South Dakota State, the Iowa State soccer team will travel to the University of Toledo in a Sunday afternoon contest.

The Cyclones (4-3-1) are hoping to have back to back games where they can put together a full 90 minutes of fundamentally sound soccer. Consistency has been somewhat a problem recently for the Cyclones. Coach Wendy Dillinger realizes that every team makes mistakes but said that you can’t make seven or eight mistakes in a row and expect to win.

“[In practice] we will reemphasize what we need to do right,” Dillinger said. “They are still young. We’ve got, including red-shirt sophomores, 24 freshman and sophomores so there is still youth [on the team.]”

This will be the first meeting between Iowa State and the Rockets (2-4-1). Toledo has had two shutout losses in the last two games but UT does possess a weapon in the form of senior forward Kristen Lynn. Lynn is at the top of the scoring chart for Toledo this season having scored 14 goals. The back-line will have to play like it did in the earlier part of the season to stop this offensive threat.

For junior defender Megan Long, traveling to Toledo provides a great opportunity to see friends and family. Long is a native of Warren, Ohio.

“I played with some of the girls on [Toledo’s] team so I know that it will be a good competitive game,” Long said. “[Toledo] is two hours from where I’m from so I will have some family coming in and some old friends from high school. I am definitely a little extra motivated [for this game.]”

The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the Scott Park Soccer Complex in Toledo, Ohio.
