The Iowa State men’s basketball 2012 recruiting class gained a second member when New York native Nkereuwem Okoro verbally committed to the Cyclones on Monday.

Okoro, a 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound wing from New York City, chose Iowa State over Seton Hall, but also fielded offers from Pittsburgh, Rutgers and other programs.

According to the recruit evaluators at Scout.com, Okoro is a three-star recruit at shooting guard.

Okoro is set to join fellow New York City native Tavon Sledge, who is preparing for his first season as a Cyclone. Matt Abdelmissah, a Brooklyn native on Fred Hoiberg’s coaching staff, played a major role for the Cyclones in the recruitment of both Okoro and Sledge.

Okoro joins power forward Georges Niang — another three-star recruit —to form the entirety of Hoiberg’s 2012 class thus far.

The St. Raymond’s standout averaged 14 points and nine rebounds a contest during his junior year of high school.

The recruiting site SwishScout.com had the following scouting report on what Okoro brings to the table:

“Defensive specialist who picks up steals and blocks shots at a high rate with the ability to lock down his man. Unpredictable offensive player who has nice skills and the ability to create, but his unrefined talent and raw ability prevent him from being an elite player.”
