After a short absence, Iowa State’s Nathan Leary rebounded at this week’s Firestone Invitational.

Leary, the lone senior on this week’s team, carded rounds of 69-69-73 for a total of 215 to put him in a tie for seventh. That finish marks Leary’s second top 10 finish of his career.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to compete at one of the best courses in the world,” coach Andrew Tank said. “It’s great to see Nathan bounce back strongly, after playing poorly in the first two tournaments.”

As for the rest of the team, the ability is there, but the consistency is lacking.

Nate McCoy finished with a solid total of 218 to tie him for 18 overall, but he said he knows he is better than that.

“I played good enough to win,” McCoy said, “but had a couple swings that cost me nine shots in four holes. I just have to eliminate the big numbers.”

Michael Wuertz was right behind McCoy with a 220, landing him in a tie for 22. Tom Lathrop carded a 223, and Borja Virto brought up the rear with a 232.

The Cyclones finished seventh overall out of 13 teams with a total of 876, and Indiana won the meet as a team with a score of 849.

There was a tie for medalist between Maryland’s John Popeck, and Indiana’s David Erny, with scores of 207 each.

The last tournament for the Cyclones before winter will be the Memphis Intercollegiate on Oct. 25 and 26.
