The ISU volleyball team defeated South Dakota State in three sets at Ames High School on Saturday, winning its fourth-straight match of the season.

Despite the dominance the Cyclones recorded on paper, coach Christy Johnson-Lynch expressed concern about the team’s style of play against the Jackrabbits.

“I thought we were a little sloppy,” Johnson-Lynch said. “I thought we got outworked by the other side so I wasn’t real pleased with the overall intensity and effort out of it. We hit decently, we served decently, but our ball handling wasn’t up to par. I just don’t think the intensity was there on our side of the match.”

The Cyclones and Jackrabbits butted heads out of the gate, but the Cyclones rode a 5-0 streak after some close scoring to win the first set, 25-17.

Iowa State survived a scary moment towards the end of the second set, where the Cyclones constantly tied the Jackrabbits in a swing of lead changes.

After trailing, 24-23, following their second timeout, the Cyclones scored three straight points to win the second set, 26-24, and go up 2-0 in set victories.

The team continued their display of moxie by starting the third period on a 5-0 run. Despite the Jackrabbits’ effort to keep it close, Iowa State pulled away to win the third set, 25-22, to seal their victory.

The Cyclones hit .287 in the match, outdoing the Jackrabbits’ .178 hitting percentage.

Four Cyclones met double digits in kills. Junior Carly Jenson and senior Victoria Henson led the team with 13 kills each. Junior Kelsey Petersen and sophomore Jamie Straube also hit double digits in kills, with 11 and 10, respectively.

On the defensive side, the team also had three Cyclones reach double digits in digs. Henson led all players with 14 digs, with senior Ashley Mass notching 13 as well. Junior Caitlin Mahoney added 10 herself.

The Cyclones finish the Iowa State Challenge tonight against Florida International at Ames High School, starting at 6:30 p.m.
