The ISU track and field team led the NCAA Championships after the first day of competition.

The Cyclones were led to the front by the duo of Lisa Koll, year three in veterinary medicine, and Betsy Saina, sophomore  in child, adult and family services, who finished first and second, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run Wednesday.

The Fort Dodge native, Koll, won her second championship in the 10,000-meter with a time of 32:49.34, finishing well ahead of her teammate and the rest of the field.

“I am a totally different runner than I was last year or even two years ago,” Koll said in a news release. “The biggest thing is confidence. I ran the race that way, the way I wanted and waited longer to put the race away.”

Koll said she ran Wednesday’s race differently than her championship effort in 2008 in order to preserve energy for Friday’s 5,000-meter race.

Saina’s second place finish earned the sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, her second All-America honor in just her second season on the track.

“Lisa ran the way she wanted to tonight, and Betsy did a great job and did exactly what we talked about in terms of race strategy,” Coach Corey Ihmels said in the release. “Betsy has come on strong here in final weeks of the season. She is just a sophomore and already a two-time All-American.”

Iowa State’s 18 points scored Wednesday placed them ahead of Southern Illinois and Hawaii-Manoa, tied for second, with 10 points each.
