Memorial Day event schedule

The Ames Patriotic council is sponsoring the Memorial Day parade and events following on Monday.

This year’s theme is “Lest we forget.”


The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at City Hall, go north on Clark Avenue, east on 9th Street and will end at the Ames Municipal Cemetery, where the program will begin at 11 a.m.

The master of ceremonies is Charlie Clatt, president of the Ames Patriotic Council.

Marine first Sergeant Brandon Eckardt will give a tribute to today’s veterans.

There will also be a patriotic reading by Sandy Deacon of Ladies Auxiliary and musical performances by Jim DeHoet and the Ames Municipal Band under the direction of Michael Golemo, chairman of the ISU music department.

There will be a reading of the names of veterans interred from May 15, 2009 to May 15, 2010.

A fly-over by the Iowa Air National Guard is scheduled for 11:21 a.m.

The program will conclude with a free lunch provided by the American Legion Post 37, 225 Main St.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Municipal Auditorium, 515 Clark Ave.

The American Legion Firing Squad will render salutes at 1:15 p.m. at the Ontario Cemetery and at 1:45 p.m. at the Story Memorial Cemetery, 3215 South Duff Ave.

The ISU Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Monday in the Reiman Ballroom at the Alumni Center, 420 Beach Ave.

The ceremony will honor all ISU employees, retirees and spouses who have died since Memorial Day 2009.

Reiman Gardens, 1407 University Blvd., will admit all active duty personnel and veterans free in honor of their service from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
