SOFTBALL: Baylor nabs wins, dashes Cyclones’ No. 4 hopes

Iowa State suffered two come-from-behind losses to the Lady Bears (26-19, 6-8 Big 12) this weekend.

This dropped the Cyclones to 25-23 overall and 3-9 in the Big 12. The pair of losses creates an even bigger workload for Iowa State as far as its seeding for postseason play.

Iowa State was one game off the pace for the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament and one game behind Baylor in the standings coming into the weekend.

Game one

Catcher Alex Johnson helped Iowa State get off to a strong start as she belted a grand slam in the top of the first to give the Cyclones four of their six runs on the inning.

Johnson now has five home runs on the season and 23 in her career. She became the first Cyclone to record at least 30 RBIs in three different seasons.

Baylor responded in its half of the third inning by putting up six runs. The Lady Bears’ Bree Hanafin got her team off to a hot start to the inning with her three-run home run to left field.

The teams traded runs and then carried a 7-7 tie going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Baylor’s Nicole Wesley singled in the first at bat of the inning before Jordan Vanatta stepped up and ended the game by hitting the ball over the left-center field fence to give the Lady Bears the 9-7 victory.

Junior pitcher Rachel Zabriskie recorded her 233rd career strikeout, which puts her tied for first with Suzanne Wedemeier, but suffered the loss and dropped her record to 20-14.

The Lady Bears’ nine runs tied Zabriskie’s career-high runs allowed.

Game two

Baylor once again used a big inning to erase an ISU lead en route to a 4-1 victory to earn the sweep over the Cyclones.

Iowa State took the lead in its half of the second inning on a Courtney Wray double, her 32nd of her career.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Kennewell got the start and was able to keep the Lady Bears off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.

Vanatta was clutch for Baylor once again as she put them on the scoreboard with a two-RBI single and Courtney Nieten followed up with a home run, scoring herself and Vanatta that increased the lead to 4-1.

The Cyclones threatened again in the top of the sixth, getting two runners on to start the inning, but were unable to capitalize, giving Baylor the victory.

Kennewell suffered the loss and moved her record to 1-4 on the year.
