This weekend at the Iowa State Last Chance, there were bright spots and there were dark spots.

A few bright spots included Zac Brouillette in the weight throw, Hillary Bor in the mile and Guor Marial in the 5,000, who ran at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame.

Brouillette threw 20.81 meters, far surpassing his mark of 19.93 meters set earlier in the season at the Iowa State Classic. Brouillette, who had already provisionally qualified with the 19.93-meter throw, greatly increased his chances of competing at NCAA Championships with his throw this weekend. 20.81 meters currently puts Brouillette among the 12 best throws in the nation.

This weekend, Bor finished first in the mile with a time of 4:03, which provisionally qualifies him for NCAAs.

Due to the fast times other competitors have run this season, a time of 4:03 will probably not be enough to run in College Station, Texas next week. Although his time will probably not secure a spot at NCAAs, Bor said he was still confident after his run.

“I can take that, I feel good. I was not expecting to run that fast. I’ve been sick all week so I just decided last night that I was just going to try it,” Bor said.

Marial has also provisionally qualified in his respective event, the 5,000-meter run.

This weekend in South Bend, however, Marial improved his chances of making the trip to NCAA Championships after running a 14:04, which tops his previous mark of 14:06 set at the ISU Classic.

Whether or not Marial’s time will earn him a spot on the track next weekend is unsure. Although Marial ran a solid time, there are quite a few athletes ahead of him on the board.

The Last Chance was a good meet for the Cyclones, despite not having anyone automatically qualify for nationals a few of the athletes did improve their times.
