SOCCER: Nebraska finishes Cyclone season

Leah Hansen —

The Cyclones wrapped up the season Friday night with a 1-3 loss to Nebraska.

At the end of the first half, the Cyclones were up 1-0 but then gave up three goals in the second half. The Cyclones’ only goal was scored in the 27th minute by Casey Bothwell, with the assist going to Leslie Hill and Laura Wooster.

“This was the fifth time this season we’ve been up in the first half and not came out with a victory,” said coach Wendy Dillinger.

With one minute remaining in the first half, Julie Chen was injured due to a collision with a Cornhusker.

“The first half we were spot on,” said junior midfielder Elise Reid, “We were doing everything right, working hard, working smart.”

During the second half the Cyclones started to get desperate for substitutes because they only had 16 healthy players and four subs.

“The second half we were still working hard but a couple times we missed the mark or we let [Nebraska] get past us when we usually wouldn’t,” Reid said.

The Cyclones sent in backup goalie Ashley Costanzo, as well as defender Meredith Manning as a forward sub.

The Cyclones and the Cornhuskers were close with shots with NU having 19 and Iowa State with 12. The Cyclones’ pre-game warm-up dealt a lot with working around the goal and taking shots.

Both goalkeepers came out with a total of 7 saves by the end of the game.

The Cyclones ended the season with a 5-12-2 record overall and a 0-8-2 record in the Big 12 Conference.

“The record doesn’t show how much progress we made and strides forward we made as a group,” Dillinger said.
