High winds whip through Iowa

DES MOINES (AP) — Strong winds swept through Iowa on Sunday bringing reports of downed trees and causing some power outages.

The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings throughout most of the state, and sustained winds up to 40 miles per hour were expected to continue into the evening.

Peak gusts reached as high as 60 mph in some areas of central Iowa including Marshalltown.

As of Sunday afternoon, Mid-American Energy reported 14,000 customers without power in the Des Moines area.

Another 5,600 MidAmerican customers were without power in the Quad Cities, and about a thousand customers in Council Bluffs experienced outages.

Weather officials say a cold front is moving through the Midwest on Sunday, bringing the high winds and then plunging temperatures.

Temperatures were expected to be in the 20s across Iowa overnight. A freeze warning was issued, meaning the temperatures could dip low enough to kill crops or other sensitive vegetation.
